Thermal Device Acquired

(Reprinted from the Bakersfield Californian)

The Bakersfield Fire Department's eyesight just improved.

The department bought its third thermal imaging device a few weeks ago, and fire officials said they'd like to have more of them.

The devices see heat instead of light, allowing firefighters to spot an injured person's shape in a room black with smoke, Capt. Pat Caprioli said.

"They've proved themselves just in training exercises that we've had," Caprioli said. "It's eyes and ears we've never had before."

Although the gadgets can be used to find elusive fires, firefighter Joshua Yates said their main purpose is rescue.

Without the devices, a firefighter will typically keep one hand on the wall and the other on a second firefighter. That second firefighter will search the room by touch, Caprioli said.

Firefighters can search a room in seconds instead of minutes with the devices, he said.

The department received its first two thermal devices in 2001 as a donation from the Bakersfield Scottish Rite Masons, Caprioli said.

The two-handed devices are a little larger than a shoebox. Each one broadcasts the image the firefighter sees to a screen inside a battalion chief's car.

The new device doesn't broadcast, but it's small enough to be held with one hand and looks similar to a tiny camcorder.

The devices stay on the department's ladder trucks that specialize in rescue and support, Caprioli said.

The department would like to buy two more devices if they're affordable.

Firefighters would probably set the devices aside to be used in case a firefighter got injured and had to be found, Caprioli said.

The department has used the devices while out handling traffic accidents as well.

At a recent night wreck, the injured driver told firefighters his girlfriend had been with him, and she may have been ejected from the car.

Because the area was woody and dark, firefighters used the device and determined that the man was simply disoriented from his head injury, Caprioli said.

The devices are also helpful in finding wiring fires that are buried under layers of insulation in attics, firefighters said.

Masonic Child ID Program

The benefit BBQ for the Child I.D. Program was very successful.

This success was due to people coming together in supporting and attending. (The attendance and takeouts were approximately 450 people.)

There were many people who worked so hard to make all things happen. I want to thank everyone for being a part of this effort.

The Child’s I.D. Program is going very well and Masonry is getting a very good coverage throughout the area. Note: There are generally three pieces of paper going to each family having their child I.D.ed. Each paper is well covered with Masonic logos.

At present there has been approximately 10,000 children who have gone through the program and many more are scheduled.

Imagine the coverage for Masonry.

Thanks for your support.
